Mexican food isn’t just about tacos, burritos, and quesadillas… and Talavera Cocina Mexicana strives to make this a point every day. Located in the heart of downtown Coral Gables, Talavera brings classic and contemporary Mexican fare to a sophisticated new level. This place isn’t your typical hole-in-the-wall, midnight munching spot. It’s a place you can sit down with the whole family and enjoy some excellent, authentic Mexican food and have a drink or two… or three.
Sure, Talavera will serve up a plate of tacos like the best of them, but if you’re looking for something more you can surely find it on their menu. Their large serving sizes can guarantee a diversified night out for those who don’t mind sharing a plate. Their staff is really knowledgeable and will work with you on any dietary restrictions, so the gluten free folk can feel comfortable knowing they’ll be in very good hands.
Recommended Talavera Dishes:
Any night out with your friends and family should start with drinks and appetizers, and Talavera excels in these departments. These had to be our favorites:
Fruity with a bit of a kick, this jalapeño-infused pineapple Margarita was really refreshing and paired well with corn tortilla chips, which every table gets in lieu of a bowl of bread. The hibiscus margarita in the back was delicious as well. It is a breath of fresh air to know that Talavera makes all their juices in house fresh every day! They also have an amazing weekday Happy Hour from 5 PM – 7 PM, offering $4.25 Margaritas and half-off well drinks.
Our favorite appetizer had to be this glorious plate of melted cheese! “El Classico” is melted Oaxaca cheese with crumbled Mexican sausage from the region of Toluca. If you’re a big fan of cheese (like us), you’ll absolutely love this dish… we could’ve eaten it all night long.
No Mexican meal is complete without tacos… and once again, Talavera has you covered. If you’re not looking for a large meal, and want something simple and flavorful, place an order of the “Mexico City Beef Tacos.” The dish comes with finely chopped beef, fresh handmade tortillas, guacamole, rice & beans, chopped onions, and cilantro. All the ingredients are fresh and the meat was cooked and seasoned to perfection. If you’re out with a group, you might want to order a few of these for the table.
If you’re interested in having a nice full plate for dinner, consider ordering the “Don Guillermo.” Consisting of beef tenderloin, drizzled with poblano cream sauce, corn truffle, and manchego cheese paired with house made vegetable white rice. Beautifully plated, the tender cuts of meat are surrounded by a vibrantly green cilantro sauce that adds an exquisite extra flavor to this delicious dish.
If beef or chicken isn’t something you’re looking to eat, Talavera offers a variety of pescatarian friendly options like the two pictured below:
The first pictured is the “Huachinango en Salsa Verde,” fresh snapper cooked in tomatillo-cilantro sauce with clam juice & shrimps.
The second is the “Pulpo Tres Chiles:” grilled octopus with tres chiles sauce: pulla, morita, guajillo, and garlic. The octopus tenticles are quite large and meaty, and the spicy chile sauce added a nice little extra kick. Even if you’re hesitant, we definitely recommend giving it a try.
Don’t forget to finish off the night with a little something sweet. Talavera has several delectable items on their dessert menu including a gluten free fruit paleta. This fresh mango paleta was the perfect sweet end to a very, very large meal.
All in all, if you’re looking for a place that offers fresh and authentic Mexican cuisine for brunch, lunch, or dinner Talavera Cocina Mexicana will exceed all your expectations. The gluten free crowd can eat and drink in peace, knowing that the staff and restaurant are quite knowledgeable and careful with any and all dietary restrictions and food allergies.
