Located in South Beach on the corner of Alton and 16th street, is a tiny Mexican restaurant with a unique twist. You know you’ve arrived at Bodega Taqueria y Tequila, when you turn the corner and see a small establishment with a built-in food truck! Long lines are common on the weekends (and especially in the evenings), and this is because Bodega has their very own massive bar/lounge situated in a secret room located behind the food truck. Find your way to this funky, uniquely decorated lounge by walking confidently through the door to the right of the truck, and you’ll quickly be greeted by live music (on Wednesdays) and lounge music on the weekends.
Bodega offers a unique dining experience every local or “out-of-towner” needs to have. Whether you’re out for a quick bite after a long day at the beach or a sudden strike of hunger while dancing the night out with your friends, Bodega has got you covered. Their full-fledged menu offers just about every delicious Mexican treat you could think of, with a healthy option or two for those of you trying to keep an eye on their waistline (see Ensalada Cesar). Open from 12 PM – 5 AM EVERYDAY, offering daily happy hour from 6 PM – 8 PM, there’s really no excuse to keep anyone from visiting this place.
Recommended Bodega Dishes:
Coming in at number one, this dish is probably the first salad that’s made it to the top of the list as our favorite. The “Ensalada Caesar” is anything BUT your typical Caesar salad; made with chopped pieces of Kale instead of romaine lettuce, these bitter leafy greens are accompanied by chunks of thick bacon, a hefty portion of Parmesan cheese, and a creamy homemade dressing that blends all the flavors together, perfectly. To make this dish gluten free, don’t forget to ask them to remove the croutons.
Next on the list, and a definite must have, is the ever so delicious “Queso Fundido” with chorizo. Melted Oaxaca cheese mixed with flavorful Mexican chorizo is presented on a mini cast iron skillet, and served with a generous helping of corn tortilla chips. This ooey-gooey cheesy dish can cure any descent sized hangover or the hungriest of appetites. If you’re a big time lover of cheese like we are, you might find sharing this dish a challenge… don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Bodega offers a variety of taco flavors all served in a corn tortilla. Picking a favorite is rather subjective as they have a variety of flavors to pick from, but if we had to pick we’d go with the “Al Pastor” and the “Barbacoa.”
The Al Pastor has Spit-Broiled pork, charred pineapple, red onion, cilantro and salsa rosada. We particularly enjoyed the chunks of charred pineapple exploding with sweet and sour juices the moment you bite into this taco. The combination of savory and sweet will make any Hispanic giddy with joy.
The Barbacoa taco is made with guajillo braised short rib, cotija cheese, charred onions, potato sticks, cilantro, and salsa rosada. Our favorite thing about this taco had to be the crunchiness of the potato sticks mixed in with the tender juiciness of the short rib. You really can’t go wrong with a barbacoa taco, but boy did we like that extra bit of crunch… especially when you’re GF and crunchy options are rather non-existent.
To close, or start your meal, we suggest one of their new “boozy paletas.” Nothing can turn an unbearably hot summer day into something you’re actually looking forward to like one of these boozy treats. Pictured below, our favorite Boozy Paleta: Lemon mint Margarita with Lemon Paleta; a refreshing lemon Popsicle made with a mint reduction, dipped into a house-made Margarita… It will surely cool you down and refresh your spirits in the very typical Miami heat.
